Data, licenses, and attribution

Every figure on this site traces back to one of the public sources below, and each region page states its own sources and license underneath the figures.

JSON API

A free API key is required for every request; there is no anonymous tier. Email hello@localeconomy.com for a key.

• GET /api/v1/regions?country=us — every region in a country
• GET /api/v1/regions/{country}/{slug} — one region's current page data
• GET /api/v1/regions/{country}/{slug}/observations — that region's full observation history
• GET /api/v1/metrics — metric definitions

Send the key as Authorization: Bearer <your key>. CSV export is not built yet; every endpoint returns JSON.

Sources currently in use

• Statistics Canada — Building permits, value by type of structure and type of work
• Statistics Canada — Labour force characteristics by census metropolitan area, 3-month moving average, seasonally adjusted
• U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), national all-industry
• U.S. Census Bureau — Building Permits Survey (BPS), CBSA monthly
• U.S. Census Bureau — Business Formation Statistics (BFS)

Using this data

Our own derived figures (scores, percentile ranks, generated summaries) may be cited with a link back to the relevant page. The underlying public data remains subject to each publisher's own license, linked above.
